What is a Pc?

Though in the broadest sense the term PC refers to any personal computer,a computer designed to be operated by an individual, It's generally used in a more specific way. People describe the most popular type of personal computers as the "PC" in order to differentiate it from its only real rival: The Apple Mac. We don,t cover Macs in this website, but we do give a brief summary of how they compare to PCs. I've also now included some links at the bottom of the page for Yahoo and Msn Messenger for Macs and other cool software for Macs. I have some new links in the Technical page to help any users with browser hijackers and Trojan virus.
If you want to buy a PC, This website will help you decide what you want and where to get it. But if you haven't got time to digest all this information,or you're already standing in the checkout queue of your local PC store, there are a few golden rules well worth bearing in mind:

1.Never buy a top of the range PC unless you absolutely need it. And you probably don't.
2.No computer is future-proof, but consider upgradeability.
3.Be suspicious of freakishly good deals. They are probably too good to be true.
4.Avoid packages that include stuff you don,t need or peripherals you are likely to replace soon.
5.Make sure you are getting the correct disks with your PC/Laptop, they are for restoring your PC when all else fails. Make sure there are stored in a place where they can be easily found when needed. If they do not come with your PC they will be an option on the computer to burn off recovery disks. Do it as soon as the pc is up and running, it can save you hundreds later on.

What do you want to do with it?

So what will you actually be paying for? Much of the cost of a PC is determined by the speed of the PROCESSOR or CPU (the computer's brain) the amount of memory or Ram ( Which determines how many things the machine can deal with at any one time) and the size of the Hard drive ( where programs,and files are stored) These elements will be of primary concern when choosing a PC, but there are also various other factors to take into account, depending in what you want to do with it. If it is to be used for advanced word processing, e.g Office use, then Microsoft Office will have to be purchased,( check link below on open-source software) this does not come pre-installed on the PC, unless specially ordered...TIP: To check the specs (XP & VISTA) on your computer, right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties. Look at the bottom of the box that appears: under the word "Computer" you'll find, the type of processor inside, along with its speed( in MHz or GHz), and then the amount of memory, which will look something like "512MB of Ram'.

Another expense when buying a PC is the software, people are under the impression that all software has to be bought. Well Microsoft like us to think that but they are more and more other sources for software and many can be obtained free. Try this link, Open Source for Windows, it has downloads for compatible office software that will open a Microsoft office document, software to burn DVDs etc if you have a DVD burner installed in your PC, to music editing software ,Word Processing / Office Suites etc, and above all its free, Don,t worry Mac users, they is a link for Open Source for Macs at the end of the page. Anyone who loves using photoshop but find it too expensive to purchase, should try GIMP. GIMP is 'open-source' software. It is not owned by any one company. It is available freely on the internet. One of the best things about mastering the GIMP technique is that GIMP can open Photoshop templates. Another reason open source stuff like Office suites ( obtained from previous link 'Open Source for Windows') is good, is that they can be downloaded from the internet and have a smaller file size which is pretty useful for the new neat Netbooks. Netbooks are new to the market. Netbooks typically include small screens, smaller keyboards, and wireless connectivity. They do not include CD or DVD drives and they typically run either Windows XP Home or Linux operating systems. But do watch out for the difference in HD (storage) size and memory, not much point in buying a netbook with out at least 120GB Harddrive. A netbook with only 8GB or less Hard Drive would not be much good for storing music or photos. Another unnecessary expense is getting a decent anti virus, plenty of good free antivirus out there, got some links to download some of the best free ones in the technical page, out of those I have found Avast the best. Computing on the hoof

If you're planning to cross the Andes on the back of a llama, you won't want to be carrying a PC tower and a 21" monitor with you. This is where notebooks (laptops) and palm PCs come into their own, they're ideal for computing on the move or flitting between home and the office. TIP: Wireless networks don't always show up the first time you perform a scan. Vista will rescan after a while, but there's no need to wait. Simple press F5 to start another scan immediately.

What to Consider Before Purchasing a Laptop Computer

Portability The main reason to have a laptop or notebook computer is portability - the need to take your entire computer from one place to another. If you don't need portability, then you should probably buy a desktop.

Expense - Laptop computers cost almost twice as much as comparably equipped desktops. Shocking isn't it? You can actually buy two comparably equipped desktops for the price of one laptop. So if you have to have a computer in two separate places, you would be better off with two desktops (if they were reasonably close together you could hook them together in a wired or wireless local area network (LAN)

Speed - Laptops are 20-30% slower than a desktop with the same features (CPU, hard drive capacity, etc.). Slower CPUs, motherboards, hard drives, and video systems all contribute to the speed loss.

Upgradeability - Laptop computers are mostly non-upgradeable. Whatever CPU, video card (built into the motherboard), sound card (also built-in), and screen, that come with the laptop are the same parts the laptop will end with. While it is possible to upgrade main memory, and removable drives, the upgrades can cost twice as much as a desktop's. Upgrades using PC cards or docking stations are also very expensive.

You can also upgrade newer laptops through their USB, USB 2.0, and Firewire ports. Only USB 2.0 and Firewire ports can run high speed devices e.g. hard drives and dvd drives. Again, all external drives cost almost twice as much as an internal drive. Remember that a desktop PC will give you more machine for your money, so if you're not planning on taking your computer out and about, don't go for a notebook.

Surfing the Internet

Practically all new PCs used to ship with a built-in Modem, but this has become less common and even on the Dell website the modem has to be ordered seperately. so if you are still using dial up you will have to include a modem. But more and more PC users use broadband which use either an USB connection or wireless. Don,t forget if you are still using a modem you will possibly need an extension cable to reach a phone socket. You don't need a hightspec computer to surf, but if you plan to get into online phone and video conferences, Check out Skype, streaming audio and the like, a slow machine will prove frustrating.

If you have not being informed yet, let me tell you that the Internet has emerged as truly mobile" now. Data cards & USB modem / data sticks from multiple vendors like Vodafone , Meteor, O2 , Three.ie & eMobile are available in the Irish market to accompany laptops & desktops, especially laptops/netbooks when they are on the move. The easy to use features of these small gazettes have enhanced the portability of Internet connections across the world. Be sure to check each top provider on their rates to suit your pocket. Word processing

Even advanced word processing is child's play for a modern PC, so if all you want is a twenty-first century typerwriter, don't splash out on a multimedia monster. If your're a serious typist,your money would be better sent on a de luxe ergonomic keyboard, a quality printer and a comfy desk chair. Found a cool download link ( click on server 1 US on page) to download RapidTyping Typing Tutor 2.5 for free, great for improving your typing skills, tip..make sure to untick (install toolbar and make yahoo your home page.)

Installing Hardware/printers & scanners etc

Before plugging in any leads for a printer, scanner or other hardware, install the drivers first. This is a disk that comes with the printer etc that you install by putting it into the drive of the PC/Laptop and follow any instructions that come up on the screen. If the hardware is plugged in before the disk there is the strong possibility that the printer will not work and will have to be uninstalled by going to the control panel, add and remove, find the printer and click remove. Then put in the disk and follow instructions.

Scanner

A scanner is a device that allows your to copy photos and printed documents into your PC so that you can email them to friends, create archives or just mess around with them using a graphics applications (photoshop, GIMP etc). The more points the scanner uses to represent an image, the higher its resolution, this is quoted like the printer, as a number of dots per inch (dpi) There are even printer that double up as scanners. The all in one printer and scanner are becoming more popular, not just because of space saving, but also they provide good value for money. Many come with lcd screens that allow a user to use them with out a PC, especially with SD memory cards. But the most popular type is the A4-size Flatbed scanner, which is as easy to use as a conventional photocopier, you place your document on the flat glass scanning bed, close the lid, pressed the button and off it goes. Flatbed scanners are inexpensive and are regularly included in PC bundles. Cheap or thrown-in models are fine for most tasks, but versions offering higher quality are available. As with other devices, try to see a scanner in operation before you buy it to be sure it produces a good image and isn't excruciatingly slow.

Monitors

Choosing a computer monitor ( also a display or screen) is a serious business, because this it the thing you are going to be staring at for hours on end. If it's too small, dull or flickery you could end up straining your eyes. When selecting a monitor, the choice will be between a standard CRT model, which has a cathode ray tube like a traditional TV set. or a flat LCD liquid crystal display, as used on notebooks. CRT monitors are extremely bulky compared to their flat screened cousins,but they are cheaper to buy, but this is also changing with the prices becoming more online with CRT monitors. LCDs generally have quite a limited angle of view, as you move to your left or right, the image will become harder to see. On the other hand, LCDs look neat, take up less space, consume much less power and emit far less brain-melting radiation. Despite all the techie stuff, the most important thing is how comfortable you feel in front of a screen, does it seem bright and sharp enough? Are lines crisp and curves smooth? And remember that bigger isn't always better, you may find that a smaller screen is easier to work with.

Creating a new account and putting on a password..

I got a customer the other day inquiring on how to put a password on an account. Well I usually advice people when they get a new PC/Laptop to always make a 2nd account as soon as the machine has started. The most basic reason for this is that one account can be an Administration account (this means that software can be installed etc. ) and the other a Standard account ( means people using that account can not install or download new software with out the Administrators permission. i.e. meaning you) Also the Administration account can have a password to enter it, leaving the other account for visitors or other members of the family to use.

Another reason to have a 2nd account is if it gets to the point that the account your using gets corrupted with a virus or some other problems, you have a 2nd account to fall back on and which can then be changed to Administration account as well, deleting the old one.

To put a password on an account and to install a 2nd account the user can go to Start-Control Panel-(in vista set it to classical view)- User Accounts- Create a password for your account- type in password, then again to confirm it. (Make sure it will be one you will not forget) ,Then type in a hint and click on Create Password. It is as easy as that. .

To make second account, staying in the Control Panel User Accounts-Click on-Manage another account-go to-Create a New Account-type the name of the new account in to the box provided e.g. Others or visitors. Making sure Standard User is selected then click on Create Account. And that is it. The instructions I gave are for a Vista operational system, but Windows XP would not be much difference.

Future possibilities

You'll probably save money in the long run if you get an upgradeable system. With a bit of knowledge and sound advice you can endsure that you'll have the option to replace, or enhance, everything from you memory to your processor. A generous selection of ports expansion slots, bays and empty RAM slots will allow you to add both internal and external devices at a later date.

Using a Single Mouse click on your PC

Want to open files and folders with a single click instead of a double click? No problem, follow these steps to change your settings in Windows XP and Vista. When you surf the Web you can click on a link with just one click and your browser takes you where you want to go, so why must you double-click to open files and folders in programs like Windows Explorer or My Computer? Essentially you are doing double the work. If you want to change this to a single click, here is how to do it.

In Windows XP:

1. Click Start and then select My Computer.
2. Click Tools at the top of the screen, then Folder Options
3. Under the General tab, select "Single-click to open an item," then click Ok.

In Windows Vista:

1. Click Start and then select Computer
2. Press the Alt key, then Tools, Folder Options
3. Under the General tab, select "Single-click to open an item," then click Ok.


Access web pages quickly (XP & VISTA)

Visiting a website is a two-stage process: first open a web browser, then type in the address. To speed things up add an address bar to the Windows Taskbar. Right-click an empty section of the Taskbar- if there is a tick next to " Lock the Taskbar " remove it.

If the pop up disappears, just right click again on the empty space of the taskbar again and just hover the mouse over Toolbars and click on Address. A tiny address bar will appear-type in any website's address and it will open in your web browser of choice.

Use Flip 3D(VISTA)

Flip 3D is one of Vista's most impressive tricks, but many people don't even know it exists. With several proframs or windows open, hold down the Alt key and push the Tab button a few times-Vista will cycle through the windows in a useful but dull way.

Now, try holding down the Windows key and pushing Tab a few times- Vista will use the impressive-looking Flip 3D system to change between the windows, allowing you to view each one as they change.

Change Start menu power button(VISTA)

By default, the power button in Vista's Start menu activates sleep mode rather than switching the computer off. To fix this open the Control Panel, ( might need to change to classic view) then Power Options, and click the "Change plan settings" link beneath the currently selected power plan.

Click "Change advanced power setting's and expand the "Power buttons and lid"entry. Expand the "Start menu power button" entry, click the menu next to Setting and select Shut down before clicking OK.

Advanced Windows shortcuts (XP & VISTA)

Windows XP is full of keyboard shortcuts, but there are a few that every user should know. Hold down the Windows Key(on the Keyboard), then try passing these letter keys: E will launch Window2s Explorer, R will launch the Run box, F will launch the Find utility, M will minimise all open windows to show the desktop, and L will instantly lock the computer,( pretty usefull if you have to leave the pc for any time and don't want you stuff to be disturbed.).

PCs vs Macs

One thing that you have to decide before you buy a new computer is whether to go for a PC or a Mac. But beware-this subject carries a lot of emotional baggage, and you're likely to find yourself on the receiving end of an impassioned rant if you request the opinion of either a PC or Mac devotee. This website only deals with PCs, but for those of you who aren't sure of the difference, or haven't yet decide which way to jump, here,s the low-down. PCs are manufactured by an endless list of firms, but they all run the same programs and work in the same way. They account for the vast share of the personal computing market, and they practically all use the Microsoft Windows operation system. Macs, on the other hand, are made by a particular company-Apple-and generally run the Mac O/S operating system. It used to be the case that PCs and Macs were almost completely incompatible: they ran different software , and you couldn't easily move information from one to the other. These days most popular programs are available for both,and it's not usually a problem to send information-by email, disk or any other means-from PC to a Mac or vice versa. A Major difference between PCs and Macs is what you actually get for your money. A Mac generally costs about 30 percent more than a Pc of the equivalent spec, and the advertised price may not even include a monitor or a floppy drive, let alone a printer and scanner-thought you don,t always have to go for Apple -make devices when expanding your kit. Macs have for a long time been favoured in certain industries, including publishing and graphics, so if you intend to work within these areas, you may want to go with the Apple crowd to save yourself the stress of compatibility glitches.
