Just finished a theses for Masters on "Factors that influence IT Communication Skills for Seniors" . So any new links to interesing topics will be put up here for everyone's benefit.
"The internet creates excellent opportunities for seniors to meet people, conduct business, plan travel, access records, stay in touch with friends and family, and support hobbies and entertainment interests. You can learn how to take advantage of the opportunities without falling prey to predators so you can have peace of mind when you go to Internet Safety for Seniors Website."
According to Craig Spiezle, director of Microsoft's Senior Initiative, "People are living longer and healthier lives, but as technology becomes more a part of our daily lives, seniors are being left out of the information age." Senior citizens are both fascinated and apprehensive of computers and their applications. With basic computer skills seniors are able to interact with family and friends, learn new things and develop professionally.

My name is Loreto Weir and I am a self-employed educational technologist . I have been teaching computer skills since 2006.
I teach all ages and all abilities, with clients ranging from 9 to 87 so you are never too old to learn. An interesting facet of this field, at least to me, is the use of games and play in the instructional method. Educators have an opportunity now to tap into the huge popularity of computer games as educational tools. Just look at what Nintendo is doing. Programs like Brain Age for the DS are just the tip of this iceberg. I think if we can turn learning into a game like experience, we can overcome resistance and convert more people into lifelong learners. Finally, I feel that it is important to not allow the rapid development of technology to eclipse the fundamental goals of teaching. In other words, its the message, not the medium.

Prior to returning back to full time education, I spend 25 years working for a manufacturing company until the work force were made redundant. While working for the company, I developed skills as a safety representative and did many first aid courses. When computers became affordable in Ireland in the late 80's I enrolled in a basic computer skills night class while still working full time and raising my 3 sons. I also developed an interest in computer maintenance and soon joined a fas computer maintenance course. When I finished the computer maintenance course I completed an ECDL course. When my place of work closed in 2005 I returned to full time education at the Tralee Community College doing a PLC ( post leaving cert) course in Multimedia Productions. This developed an interest in Multimedia and my teachers encouraged me to enroll at the IT Tralee Technology College doing Interactive Multimedia.
